The Power of a Lasting Legacy

The Power of a Lasting Legacy

Each New Year, we get the opportunity to begin anew. Each New Year brings new possibilities.  Some of us set “New Year’s Resolutions”, yet less than 10% of us actually keep them.  Instead of focusing on the temporary, why don’t we focus on the LASTING?

For me, this past year was both an extraordinary year of growth and a year that was marked by a great loss of so many dear friends and family members. Yet this is not a story about loss.  It is one of tremendous gain.  You see, each of those wonderful people gave of themselves and left a lasting legacy.

“The word legacy is frequently used to describe the property that people leave their heirs when they die. But every human being also leaves behind a nonmaterial legacy — one that’s harder to define but often far more important. This legacy comprises a lifetime of relationships, accomplishments, truths, and values, and it lives on in those whose lives they’ve touched.” (Caring.com)

What do you want your legacy to be?  When you think about all the people to whom you are exposed, face to face, or even virtually, what do you want those people to think about when they think of you?  How do others describe your values and your contributions?  Are you living up to what you want your own legacy to be?

Here are ten thoughts to help you on your path toward leaving a powerful, lasting legacy:

  1. Always leave people and things better than you found them.
  2. Never miss an opportunity to say something nice or something supportive.
  3. Always remember that you have 2 ears and 1 mouth, use them accordingly.
  4. THINK before you speak (or post).
  5. When someone asks for your help or your advice, make the time to listen to him or her thoroughly and offer your best counsel.
  6. Any job worth doing is a job worth doing extremely well.
  7. If you say you are going to do something, DO IT! (Moreover, do it when you say you are going to do it).
  8. Invest in yourself so you have something to invest in others. Never stop learning.
  9. Live life fully! Don’t put off living for tomorrow, as tomorrow is not a guarantee.
  10. Work hard, play hard, love, grow, cherish, and most of all share.

Each of these ten thoughts seems simple enough on the surface, but all of them take work, focus and commitment. When you think of those who were the most positive influencers in your life, I bet you see many of the qualities listed above.

“If standard of living is your major objective, quality of life almost never improves, but if quality of life is your number one objective, your standard of living almost always improves.”  ~Zig Ziglar.  Mr. Ziglar also taught us that, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

“My mother always told me that as you go through life, no matter what you do, or how you do it, you leave a little footprint, and that’s your legacy.”  ~Jan Brewer

Let’s make 2015 a year of beginning. Let’s make it a year where we focus on making the world a better a place and in doing so positively touch as many people as we can to leave a lasting legacy.  Just imagine what a difference we can make in the world around us.
